We thought we had a van in the bag but it turned out that this was holiday season and booking one day in advance was not on.  We eventually found availability, booked online and then called but it turned out the van wouldn't be available until Thursday.  Despite that the guy tried to honour our order by offering us a free car until the van was ready...result! Now we could atleast get out and about so we set off for Kaikoura, about 3 hours up the coast from ChrIstchurch. Wow, as we turned the bend into Kaikoura the shocking blue expanse of water spread between the mountains and stopped us in our tracks.

Even the local seal colony played their part and came out in force to display and show off.

These photos don't do justice to the amazing colours, crisp blue water, mustard Yellow Seaweed all outlined with white froth, breathtaking.

Deep gullies cut into the rocks fill up like fingers around you and then explode with white wash as the pressure gets too much, delivering a fine shower to all in its way.

The sky was so clear and blue, the mountains looming in the distance against a barren and almost Mars-like terrain.  Breathtaking, we were still hyper as we ate our fish and chips outside our little holiday park shed...home for the night.

The next day we headed back towards Christchurch ready to collect our campervan the following day. Akaroa on Banks Peninsula was calling out to be explored before we left the Christchurch area.

We had hoped to stay but price and availability prohibited so, unfortunately, after a long drive there, a short explore we headed off for Governors Bay and a cheap but comfortable room with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc overlooking the bay...not too shoddy huh!

Campervan ahoy tomorrow, exploration starts in earnest as we head down the coast to see what we will see.
