We had planned to visit the Royal Albatross centre and Penguin Place before leaving the peninsula but their prices were astronomical for a 30 minute video/tour so we decided to hope for wild sightings on our travels.  Getting the right balance between budget vs experience is a continual battle which we don't always win but in this case sightings in the wild SHOULD be possible so fingers crossed we will still get to see Blue penguins, Yellow Eyed penguins and Albatross.  The Catlins are calling, so first stop Kaka point.

Then Nugget Point and Roaring Bay complete with lighthouse, fur seals and astounding views.

The rocks were surrounded by long tendrils of mustard yellow seaweed like blonde hair floating on the surface.

We watched fur seals playing and splashing in water pools, if you zoom in on the square pool middle left of the photo you just might be able to see a couple.  My one regret is not having a decent zoom lens as, whilst Matt's phone camera takes great photos, we are limited for decent distance shots.

Surat Bay was nothing short of idyllic

and the reported sightings of sea lions proved correct much to my complete delight.  I watched this little fatty snore away, with the odd flipper flip of sand, until Matt dragged me away.

After a full and beauty filled day we rocked up to our freedom campsite, right beside Parakanui Bay to watch the day turn to night...

and this happy man fry burgers in the last of the sunshine.
